In Her own words, KAILLEY'S Story:

"In January 2022, while sick, I developed a cough that forced me to sleep upright for a few days. Soon after, I noticed numbness down the entire right side of my body, from my neck to my ankle. I assumed it was from sleeping awkwardly or a pinched nerve. Then I realized I couldn't feel heat on my right side.

The numbness didn't resolve and eventually spread to my left shoulder. My balance and coordination became affected, and it was clear something wasn't right. An MRI ordered by the neurologist revealed a cavernous malformation (CM) in my cervical spine at C2/C3. I felt overwhelmed by the diagnosis and the lack of available information online. Connecting with Cavernous Malformation Canada and the Alliance to Cure Cavernous Malformation provided education, validation, and community during a very uncertain time.

With input from multiple specialists, I initially chose a conservative, "wait-and-see" approach with close monitoring. In fall 2023, my symptoms worsened. A follow-up MRI showed the CM had bled and increased in size. After discussions with my neurosurgeon, surgery was now the best option. On May 1, 2024, I underwent a cervical laminectomy to remove the cavernous malformation.

Recovery took time, but the care I received was exceptional and helped me work toward my new normal. While this journey has been complex and at times frightening, I feel far better equipped to understand my condition, manage symptoms, and navigate what comes next."
